The Wrong Way To Better Your Grades

A Canadian 8th grader is is huge trouble at school (and at home, I’d imagine) for hacking into school servers.  According to school officials, his hacking into the servers showed them where their system’s weaknesses were so they can properly rectify the situation.  Gosh, I just love good PR people……. ha ha

PETERBOROUGH, Ontario, Jan. 11 (UPI) — A Canadian school official said computer security had to be improved because an eighth-grade hacker accessed test results on a server.

John Mackle, education director at the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board, said the pupil at St. Anne’s School in Peterborough, Ontario, used a laptop and some downloaded software to access test results from around the province, the Toronto Sun reported Tuesday.

“To be honest, I don’t know that he would have understood what he was seeing,” Mackle said. “The information that he was able to see wouldn’t have made a lot of sense to him.”

Mackle said some of the server’s security measures had been offline following an upgrade before the incident.

“We’ve taken the steps to make sure this can’t happen again,” he said.

The official said he could not discuss consequences for the boy, who was not named, due to privacy regulations.”
